On our travels we met Mandla Ndlela, working in soapstone. He is a modest young man and a real artist and we are proud to show you some of his work.

Top left photo shows some highly polished rhinos in black soapstone. Righthand photo: some life-like elephants. The surface of these pieces are worked to simulate the roughness of real elephant-skin.

Mandla informed us that a single highly polished piece could take as long as a week to produce as it is firstly hacked out of a piece of rock with an axe, then worked with a saw-blade and finally sanded and polished to perfection! His work shows an intimate knowledge of the animals' form and an artistic sensitivity to his medium that makes his work truly outstanding. The colour of the stone used,
